The following article by Bill Garretson is a must read for all you Beowulf fans. Below is the first paragraph, but you must go to the LINKS section of this website to see the complete article.
Beowulf-the puzzle of the ancient poem's Christian Motif. There is a thread of of Christianity running through the saga. The question is: How could a pagan people with only Norse or Teutonic gods have produced such a work. Torch Magazine Spring 2001
"On first reading Beowulf, we were puzzled by the Christian motif of the Poem. How could a pagan people, known then to have only Norse or Teutonic Gods, i.e. Woden, Thor, Fria, etc. have produced such a work? As the years have gone by, its been noted this same mystery has long been debated by scholars. Also, what people were Beowulf's-English, German, Scandinavian? And what is the type of Christianity the Poem professes?"'
Note: Due to formatting problems with the Torch Magazine, we could not post the article in its entirety. Instead, we offer the link to the magazine in our LINKS section.
